Built on a sequence of hills overlooking a large bay with the Sierra Maestra in the background, Santiago de Cuba is one of Cuba´s most picturesque cities. Its colorful streets sweep up and down steep hills, giving visitors a nice workout on a stroll through the city.

Cuba’s second-largest city, Santiago de Cuba was founded on June 28, 1524 by the Spanish. From 1522 until 1589 it was the capital of Cuba.

Santiago de Cuba is authentic Caribbean through and through. It’s closer to Hispaniola than Havana, which has something to do with it. The city also has deep African roots and traditions, attributable to the colonial slave trade and the influx of French immigrants, accompanied by their African slaves, after the Haitian slave revolt of 1791.

Many Cuban music genres originated here. If Cuban rhythms and passionate dances move you, this is a must-visit destination, especially during the raucous annual Carnival celebrations in July. Other exciting events include the Festival del Caribe and Fiesta del Fuego. For an excellent night out any time visit the Casa de la Trova – both the music and dancing are phenomenal.

Parque Céspedes is the gathering place for young and old. It’s a great starting point for visits to many attractions including the Diego Velázquez Museum, the oldest house still standing in Cuba. Next to it is the municipal building where Fidel Castro made his first speech after the 1959 victory; the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba is opposite. Within walking distance lies the Carnival Museum and Bacardí Museum, the latter displaying a private collection of the famous Bacardí family.

Casa Leonardo Perez: This is a 3 bedrooms apartment with parking, terrace overlooking the mountains of the Sierra Maestra, spacious balcony overlooking the street, adequate privacy. We rent 2 bed-rooms with 1 shared bathroom. Privacy is assured with separate entrance and exit and the family never interferes, the use of the living room is exclusively for tourists. The house is staffed by two people, my wife Dr. Alina Guerrero and a nice lady that help her, the food is excellent, very well and quality assured the price ranges from 5 to 8 CUC whole meal, depending on the menu it always becomes 5 if the stay is more than three days or a regular customer, we have a garage for free. The house is located at the heart of the city in a quiet low traffic street, one block from the main street of the city and its busiest nightclubs, all these features make our home a place to meet our Santiago, serve the needs of our customers. Santiago de Cuba is the capital city of Santiago de Cuba Province. Santiago de Cuba, near the east end of the island, 970 km from Havana, is Cuba’s second city, with its own identity and charm. Its culture is different from Havana’s, with more emphasis on its Afro-Caribbean roots and Santería plays a large part in people’s lives. There are regional differences in the music, partly because of past immigrants from the former French colony of Saint-Domingue, now Haiti. Carnival is an experience worth going out of your way for, with energetic dancing, parades, music and increasingly sophisticated costumes as the economy improves. This City is one of the nicest town in Cuba. Enjoy its unique vibe with locals.
